| Writing Intensive
All University of Nebraska - Kearney
undergraduate students must satisfactorily complete twelve
hours of Writing Intensive (WI) and six hours of Cultural
Diversity (CD) coursework. These courses are specifically
designated by the General Studies Council. Information about
WI and CD courses is located in the General Studies Program
section of the UN-K Catalog and the UN-K
website. A complete list of courses and instructors
approved as WI and CD is located through the website http://www.aaunk.edu/generalstudies/cdwi.htm.
For WI and CD courses offered in a specific semester, consult
the class schedule or the UNK
website.
WI courses are designed to help students
develop their writing skills. Important characteristics
include: students have the opportunity to revise their written
work, a significant portion of the grade is based upon written
work, and students write approximately 5,000 words (twenty
pages). The English composition courses do not qualify
a WI courses. CD courses are designed to provide students
with an understanding of the experiences and values of groups
and cultures outside the mainstream of American life. In
CD courses, issues of race, ethnicity, or gender are integral
to the class. Readings and other material used in CD courses
must give substantial voice to the selected group.
University of Kearney will accept CD and WI transfer credit
under some circumstances. Transfer students need to work
closely with their academic advisors to meet the CD and
WI requirements.
