SOCI 1010 - Introduction to Sociology

Course Description:  Introduction to the basic principles of sociology including the study of culture, socialization, social structure, social institutions, deviance, inequalities, and theoretical perspectives. See HawkNET for call number.

Course Objectives: Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  1. Apply sociological principles to daily life and world circumstances.
  2. Utilize the three theories of sociology in a wide variety of applications.
  3. Use sociology terminology accurately and skillfully.

Content Information:

In order to receive a passing grade for SOCI 1010-90, students must complete all assignments and take all tests.

To ensure that the grade for this course transfers, students must earn a minimum grade of “C.”

Upon successful completion of this course, students will have completed the following:

  • 1-page introduction
  • 1 or 2-page responses to magazine or newspaper articles (double-spaced)
  • ˝ to 1-page response for every chapter assigned (double-spaced) 12 total
  • four exams over the chapters in the text
  • at least six responses to topics on the discussion board.
  • Complete about 2 chapters a week during the summer session.

Course Expectations: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. understand the purpose of society and the sociological perspective.
  2. analyze sociological reality.
  3. analyze the effects of social change and social conflict.
  4. apply the socialization process to the student’s life.
  5. understand the different sociological theories.
  6. identify differences in groups, organization, and social structure.
  7. understand deviance and its effect on society.
  8. determine the implications of culture, race, ethnicity, gender, social class, age, religion and education on socialization.
  9. explore family as a basic sociological unit.
  10. identify social institutions and their effect on society
  11. understand the difference between micro and macro sociology.
  12. analyze the effect of technology  and science on society.

Student Requirements:

  1. Have a valid e-mail address
  2. E-mail the course instructor prior to the first day of class
  3. Have access to the Internet
  4. Spend approximately 6 hours a week working on the course
  5. Must obtain required text and access code
  6. The student must have computer literacy skills to:
    • Save and retrieve files to a location
    • Download, save, and open files from a source
    • Locate and submit files with an attachment
    • Create, edit, save, and retrieve files from a location
    • Navigate the Internet to reach a web site or search the Internet
    • Create, open, and read e-mails and attach files in an e-mail
  7. Students are strongly encouraged to take the online tutorial and/or non-credit online preparation course.
  8. Have adequate computer operating hardware (see online course information on the website for hardware requirements)
