LNSK 1100 - Learning Skills for Success

Course Description: Designed to provide an opportunity for students to learn and adopt methods to promote their success in college. Topics include: time management, test-taking, reading, note-taking, memory, study techniques, library use, development of critical and creative thinking, communication skills, diversity, understanding the value of your health as a student, money management, relationships, available campus-community-state resources, and goal setting techniques.

Course Objectives: Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  1. Understand how different text ideas are mere tools to be used as a student or in life when they apply best.
  2. Discover time management skills necessary for success in college, business, and life. *
  3. Learn self-management ideas for motivation.
  4. Explore different reading techniques that can be used in different styles of classes.
  5. Work with many ideas for observing, recording. And reviewing as a note taker.
  6. Experience ideas for taking notes with fast talking instructors.
  7. Discover several different test taking anxiety reduction ideas.
  8. Study how to benefit by accepting responsibility.
  9. Practice critical thinking skills. *
  10. Understand good communication skills. ***
  11. Learn strategies in conflict resolution. **
  12. Explore leadership qualities **
  13. Review ideas for appreciating diversity**
  14. Consider what develops higher self-esteem
  15. Recognize suicide danger signals **
  16. Identify threats to our society’s health and attitudes.
  17. Identify personal learning styles and how to benefit from such.

Content Information: In order to receive a passing grade for LNSK 1100, students must complete:

  • Sufficient work assigned by their instructors to earn a course grade of “C” or better.
  • To ensure that this objective is met, a minimum grade of “C” in LNSK 1100 is required to qualify for transfer.
  • Upon successful completion of this course, student will have completed the following:
    • 32 Online assignments
    • 11 Online quizzes
    • 4 Online tests

Course Expectations: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Apply time management tools in life.
  2. Apply test taking strategies as a student
  3. Demonstrates effective human relation’s skills.
  4. Demonstrates strong student skills.
  5. Manage personal aspects of life including motivational, money, and health.
Student Requirements:
  1. Have a valid email address
  2. E-mail the course instructor prior to the first day of class
  3. Have access to the Internet
  4. 30 hours is expected of the student to work in the course.
  5. Must obtain required access codes, books, lab supplies, and supplemental materials.
  6. The student must have computer literacy skills to:
    • Save and retrieve files to a location
    • Download, save, and open files from a source.
    • Locate and submit files with an attachment

    • Create, edit, save, and retrieve files from a location

    • Participate in an online chat room environment

    • Navigate the internet to reach a web site or search the Internet

    • Create, open, and read e-mails and attach files in an e-mail

  7. Students are strongly encouraged to take the online tutorial and/or non-credit online preparation course.
  8. Have adequate computer operating hardware (see online course information on the website for hardware requirements)
