South Sioux City Expansion and Programs

Planning continues for a new college center to be constructed in South Sioux City. Northeast Community College and Wayne State College will be the education partners in the facility, with the Community Development Agency for the City of South Sioux City assisting in the construction process. The partners began working on the project to address the growing demand for public postsecondary educational opportunities and workforce training in the region. The College Center will serve the area by creating a “one-stop” consolidated service center offering quality education and training for area residents at an affordable price.

The proposed 44,530 square foot facility will provide seamless education that allows students in the region to access programming and services to support their academic and career goals. The combination of Adult Basic Education, customized training for business and industry, continuing education, career and technical training, and degree programs provide a comprehensive and integrated educational system. The primary purposes of the proposed College Center are:

  • to improve access to higher education in an underserved area of Nebraska with special focus on the large number of first-generation and minority students in the region;
  • to offer comprehensive “start-to-finish” degree programs that will allow place-bound students to earn associate’s, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees in focus areas without having to relocate; and
  • to support economic and community development in the region through workforce training and consolidation of services.

The Coordinating Commission for Postsecondary Education approved a capital construction request in December 2006. Wayne State College is seeking a state appropriation to fund a portion of the facility during the 2007 legislative session. The partners will begin planning for a local capital campaign, as well as continuing the development of federal funding requests.

In preparation for the construction of the College Center, Northeast Community College will continue to expand classes offered at the South Sioux City Education Center located at 3309 Daniels Lane in the Lance Hedquist Building in the Westside Business Park area of South Sioux City. Degree and short-term training programs that will be offered in 2007-2008 in South Sioux City through a combination of traditional, distance, and online delivery include the following:

  • Associate of Arts with an emphasis in:
    • Academic Transfer
    • Behavioral Sciences
    • Business Administration

    • Library Technical Assistant
  • Associate of Applied Science in:

  • Short-Term Training in:
    • Emergency Medical Technician – Basic
    • Medication Aide

Students accepted into the nursing program are able to complete a large portion of the course and clinical work for the associate and practical nursing degrees in South Sioux City. Students must attend classes at the Norfolk campus two days per week for the first semester only. The majority of classes in subsequent semesters will be offered in South Sioux City. Clinical work will be arranged in close proximity to the South Sioux City area, based on student need.
